In this module, you will develop and improve the following skills:

  • Using different planting techniques based on musical context.
  • Mastering barre chords.
  • Enhancing the speed and coordination of both hands.
  • Learning the rest stroke plucking technique.
  • Building a foundation for effortless hammer-on and pull-off techniques.
  • Unlocking exciting new musical pieces through the skills you’ll learn.

We’ll begin by exploring a fingerstyle pattern commonly used in guitar music. We’ll focus on practicing two different planting techniques with this pattern: simultaneous planting (planting three fingers at once) and sequential planting (planting each finger seperately). We’ll discover how to apply them in a musical context.

The rule is as follows:

  • For speed, choose simultaneous planting (as it saves you time and movement).
  • For slow, sustained, beautiful accompaniment, choose sequential planting (planting each finger individually).

Additionally, you will have a chance to learn two beautiful compositions where you can explore this concept fully. Have fun!

INVESTIGATE THESE BEAUTIFUL COMPOSITIONS

Now, it’s time to apply the two planting techniques within a musical context. Given the fast tempo of the following composition, we’ll use simultaneous planting – planting all three fingers (index, middle, and ring) together – as it will help us achieve the speed with minimal effort.

In contrast, the following composition requires sustained tones. To achieve this, we’ll use sequential planting (planting each finger one by one).

Now it’s time to add a Spanish guitar flavour to your sound. We are going to dive into the world of a beautiful technique called apoyando, also known as the rest stroke. This fundamental flamenco guitar technique involves resting your plucking finger on the adjacent string after striking, creating a rich and resonant sound. It will not only enhance your sound and help you play punchy melodies, but also allows for blazing-fast passages that will impress your audience. Let’s unlock the full potential of apoyando!
